Laxatives and Eating Disorders - The Things You Should Know

It was in the news a few weeks ago that moves were afoot to stop laxatives from being available off the shelf in pharmacies and, presumably, supermarkets.

Apparently, as with paracetamol-based products and cough medicines, we need to be protected from ourselves and our addictions.

I fail to see how taking it off the shelf and making it dispensary-only is really going to stop people from using them for nefarious purposes, specifically those suffering with eating disorders.

What we really need is for more information to be available on the subject. For those of us who have trodden this well worn path over many years to educate those who follow in our footsteps. And, hopefully, to prevent them from making the same mistakes and suffering the same long term health consequences.

For anyone who thinks that laxatives are a good idea for dieting, the many years of intestinal difficulty that I suffered as a result of taking that route to facilitate my own eating disorder should provide a stark warning.

In my late teens and early twenties, I was both bulimic and anorexic. Mostly, I would eat nothing and use the laxatives to lose more weight but, if I did binge, I went through purging myself by putting my fingers into my mouth and activating the gag reflex until I vomited.

This is a totally disgusting process, which rots your teeth and just makes you feel permanently nauseous.

After several months of this, I could bear it no longer and moved onto laxatives to do the job more discreetly.

As a result, my poor bowels never really knew where they were.

Sure, it seemed to work for a while but then my system just became totally confused.

I was either completely constipated, with the waste building back up through my system and causing terrible bloating which only added to my distorted perception of my own body.

Alternatively, my stools were so loose that I was terrified to go out for fear of soiling myself.

However, my body dysmorphia meant that I persisted in this ridiculous routine of starving and purging myself.

Then followed the worst symptoms. The acute stomach cramps every time I did try to eat something. These were so painful that I couldn't walk. My gut would go into spasm, causing my belly to distend. I wanted to be sick and to defecate to ease the painful swelling but was unable to do either.

Although I only used the laxatives regularly for a year or so, these problems continued for decades afterwards, even during the time periods when I thought my anorexia was under control.

IBS and Crohns Disease were all suspected at various times, but now I know that a lot of it was triggered by my reliance on laxatives.

The damage this did to my intestinal walls was exacerbated by my predominantly bread-based diet and stressful lifestyle. The candida (gut bacteria) proliferated and leeched through into other parts of my body, causing thrush and other yeast infections.

After suffering with this for many years, I have chosen to try the anti-candida diet for the last few months and start making my gut more healthy by taking probiotics.

I haven't used a laxative for over twenty years, but only now that my diet has improved have I actually started to recover from the damage that my prolific use of them caused.

Is it Sex Drive that Causes Dogs to Hump Things?

Why do some neutered male and spayed female dogs try to hump other dogs, toys and even humans?

Is it an unusual sex drive, a hormone deficiency or an over abundance of testosterone?

This is a question that has been puzzling me for some time as I have been in the company of small dogs that seem to have an incessant need to hump certain toys on a constant basis.

In trying to research this subject, I found very little concrete information as to why some dogs do this and others do not.

The only physical reason I could find was that there is a possibility that the dog is suffering from a condition in the genital area that is causing itching or is irritated. Of course, if that is the problem, the constant rubbing of the area on a toy, other dog or even a person just creates more irritation.

The thing to do here, is examine the genital area and if you see irritation, call your vet as he/she can prescribe medication to cure the problem, before it gets to be a habit,

The other possibility is that when the dog tried it once, for whatever reason, it felt good and since no one stopped the behavior, it ultimately became a habit too hard to break. But watching a dog perform its gyrations in front of small children or elderly adults seems to be a bit inappropriate.

Adolescent dogs have a great deal of testosterone, even the neutered ones and a visit to a dog park with all the wonderful smells that abound there, can get even the most calm dog excited.

Since conversation, holding hands or just plain lusting is not a dog's way of handling its hormones, humping becomes a natural thing to do.

The problem with this "natural behavior" is humping in many cases is a show of dominance, a feeling of power and while I realize that, that can be a nice feeling, a dog can get carried away with it and force another dog into submission.

Forcing another dog into submission can have a profound effect on its personality. Dogs are social creatures and like their human counterparts need to feel good about themselves and their world.

A dog forced into submission by another dog in the Dog Park or anywhere else can easily become afraid of other dogs or suddenly change its personality and become the aggressor.

Socializing your puppy with dogs of both sexes can help orient your dog to sexual behavior that is attracted to the opposite sex; and not to same sex dogs, pillows, toys or humans.

Puppies in play and some adult dogs in play do hump each other.

It may be a show of dominance at that moment, but usually it is done as a part of whatever game they are playing.

What can you do if this mannerism has become a habit that is not only embarrassing to you, but could create an irritation for the dog?

Distraction is the "key word." It matters not whether your dog is neutered or not. Dogs that are intact do not need to hump everything they see either.

If you are at the Dog Park and your dog is the main target for the day, a good way to stop the encounter is to train your dog to sit on cue. A sitting dog is not an acceptable target. This works for both males and females.

Female dogs learned this on their own, when they did not want to be bothered by adoring males.

If it is your dog that has discovered that humping is fun and you are not seeing the joy in it, your job is to become the distracter.

This will take patience on your part and time, especially since most of us are not on call for our dogs 24/7.

Removing the larger toys that can be humped will help, along with pillows and any other soft objects that appear to be attractive to your dog.

When you are home being watchful of your dog's actions is the first prerequisite. Whenever your dog starts the action, distract it with a treat, a toy or a walk.

The humping is a habit and habits can be broken, after a few days of being distracted, the habit should become less and less noticeable and eventually will fade away.

Patience and determination are the prime requirements on your part, with distraction being the key element.

Good Luck.

Top 3 Karma Sutra Positions to Make Your Partner Wild With Passion

Everyone wants to spice up their love life from time to time and these Kama Sutra love-making positions will ensure greater satisfaction from both partners.

1) The Raised Missionary. This is similar to the classical missionary position where the woman lies on her back. The difference being that the woman will put her feet flat on the bed and lift her hips upwards. She raises her hips to the level of the male who is kneeling beside her. This takes the classic missionary position to new heights, so to speak, and allows for deeper penetration.

2) The Cradle. This is a good one for the shower. It requires a little bit of upper body strength but is definitely worth the effort. The man is in the standing position while the woman puts her arms around the man's neck. She then lifts herself up and puts her legs around the man's waist. The man supports her weight by holding her butt. If she is getting too heavy you can bend your legs a little or hold her up against a wall. If you are running out of energy distract her with a kiss.

3) Reverse Cowgirl. Let her do the work. This one has a low difficulty rating with maximum satisfaction. The man lies on his back and the woman sits on top facing away from the man. The female controls the love-making and find they can hit all the right spots from this position. It is low on intimacy as you are not facing each other but provides pure pleasure, especially for the woman, and a great view for the man.

Educating Our Children About the Results of Sexual Intercourse

As a mother, grandmother and experienced nurse in various areas of the medical field, I can't help but wonder why the children in our society today either know too much about sexual intercourse or not enough. As I was growing up, my mother explained to me about a girl having her periods and what to expect but she never explained to me about the feelings that I would have when I fell in "love" and had those "want to" feelings. My mother taught me much in my life time and at 89 she is still teaching me a lot but when I was a teenager she never taught me what happened to a boy/man when he was aroused and what to expect. All she told me was "don't let that boy put his hands in your pants". She never told me NOT to let him put anything else in my pants.

As I have said in another article many people even very young folks go to the forums or Yahoo Answers to get help. I feel it is a shame that parents don't take the time to explain more about the facts of life but just assume their children know and give their daughters birth control pills rather then teaching abstinence. Woe to us today if we teach our children not to have intercourse before marriage.

Some parents want to know how to take to their children about sex. I found with my boys and my 10 yr old granddaughter that just explaining it as we know what it is. Tell the girls that boys have a penis, explain what an erection is, tell your daughters what to expect when a boy comes on to her and that she does NOT have to do anything just because he says " if you love me you'll let me." I assume that boys still use that line. Also we should teach our boys to respect girls and that our daughters should not be so will to loose their virginity. If they don't know what virginity means, then explain it. It seems that parents don't know how to be adults these days. It is in my opinion that it is time for parents to take charge and tell our children the truth about intercourse plain and simple.

If your child, your daughter were to come to you at any age and tell you that she were pregnant who would you blame? Would your child feel comfortable to come and tell you anything? We love our children unconditionally so why shouldn't your child feel as though she could come to you and tell you anything? I have read too many times that a young girl thought she was pregnant, but couldn't go to her parents and talk to them. I have read where a young girl had said she had not even been with a boy but had been masturbating and wanted to know could she get pregnant that way. Something does not compute here. Children are not being educated about how to get pregnant. Parents are assuming their children know, or are expecting someone else to teach them about sexual intercourse and the consequences of these actions.

I wonder if parents explain to their children about sexually transmitted diseases. It's one thing to put daughters on birth control but is it explained that anyone having intercourse can contract a sexually transmitted disease? Condoms is not a means of protecting our sons or our daughters. Abstinence is the only way to keep our children safe from pregnancy or sexually transmitted diseases. I believe that if we explain all there is to know about sex, the feelings, what happens to males, what can happen should intercourse take place then we would have less diseases and unwanted pregnancies. Of course they come to an age that we can't do anything about what they do but at least it could be said that they were taught about the consequences.

Parents should not be afraid to talk to their children about such a serious subject and children should not be afraid to go to their parents and tell them of any problem they might have. Our children are gifts from God, the least we can do it to teach them right from wrong, love them unconditionally and even if both parents work, take the time to show them, love them and teach them. There could come a day when you find yourself looking at the grave of your child, just because you did not take the time to teach your precious child about some of the dangers of life.
